I often come across a very specific type of gentle manipulation: the soft sell.

It starts with a good exchange, politeness, some common interests in culture and a good conversation. And then a few emails in, my rates are negotiated with a courteous tone, my (rather clear) services are being ignored, and I become the problem for sticking to the pre-established standards.

Unfortunately my darlings, this does not work on me.
