A Love Letter to Sydney
One of my greatest pleasures in life is a slow morning, nestled between the sheets, completely immersed in a novel. There’s something deeply intimate about being curled up, lost in a private world that exists just for you. In many ways, this is how I spend each day: stepping into moments that feel personal, intimate, and just a little bit indulgent.
Reading is simply sexy.
This year, I set myself a goal: to read a book from every country in the world.
For those who know me, this won’t come as a surprise. I’ve always been drawn to global politics and modern history. I’m endlessly curious - some have called me a student of the world. I am especially drawn to big cities and the secrets they hold.
So to begin my reading goal it felt only right to start in my city, with Sydney by Delia Falconer.
This book is a love letter to the city, capturing its strange and sometimes violent past, the beauty and glamour staged before the backdrop of the glittering Sydney harbour.
Sydney made me think about the many ways over the years I’ve experienced the city myself.
The view from a penthouse suite at night, city lights stretching endlessly beyond the glass.
A rooftop pool, the quiet thrill of slipping in for a late night swim.
The harbour framed through studio windows as I stretch at the ballet barre.
Going to my favourite secondhand bookstore, breathing in the scent of old books.
Weaving through a sea of suits in the CBD, on my way to meet someone who’s been on my mind all day.
The golden hour from a high-rise bar, watching the sunlight, which once kissed the sea into a thousand sparkles, suddenly fade over the Harbour Bridge.
I smile to myself thinking of all the private shared memories etched throughout corners of the city, and the many more to come.
Do you have a favourite book, and or a memory in or about Sydney? I would love to hear about it.
